Chapter 23

Jason

It feels good to be with Sophie once again. More than good, I have a deep longing to be alone with her. As we eat in the restaurant, I smile at her tale of the gigolo; she can be so naïve sometimes.

We agree to continue the evening in her hotel suite and make our way up in the elevator. As soon as we enter the suite, I recognize it as the one we spent many a happy night in the past. This is where she hung out when I met her. As I recall, I attended her twentieth birthday party here. I remember that night as though it was only yesterday. Once our eyes locked together, she captivated and enchanted me. Enthralled, I couldn’t let go as she held my hand and dragged me along wherever she went. She was like a vibrant butterfly fluttering around laughing and joking and I hung on like a lovesick schoolboy. I had no complaints, I didn’t want to let go of this beautiful new person in my life.

“What are you smiling at?” she asks me as I accept a glass of bubbly from her.

“Old memories,” I tell her. “Ah, champagne, and what is the occasion?” I ask, watching the bubbles rise in my tall slender glass.

“If I recall, you left me,” I remind her but when I see her lip pout, I take it all back. “Although it was my fault that you had to flee. You know that I never meant to cause you such distress, don’t you?”

“We’ll talk about it later,” she says, sipping her champagne. “Tonight is for making up.”

“I’ll drink to that, my love,” I agree and finish off my glass as I follow her onto the balcony.

The cold air is bracing but the sight of the colorful city lights is quite mesmerizing. I move to stand closer to Sophie, so our bodies touch. Placing my arm around her, I enjoy the warmth of her body. She shivers but I don’t think it’s the cold. Putting the palm of my hand under her chin, I turn her head toward mine.

“You know my heart literally aches for you,” I tell her. “Promise me that you’ll never run from me like that ever again?”

“Only if you promise never to hurt me like that ever again,” she whispers back to me.

I see a single teardrop in the corner of her eye and I wipe it away.

“I swear that I didn’t mean to hurt you. I was trying to protect you but it all went wrong. We men have a habit of messing things up. Can you ever forgive me?”

“I can and I do,” she smiles back at me and her eyes twinkle in the semi-darkness.

How can I resist stealing a kiss? Luckily, she responds to my attempts and our warm kiss is more about love than passion. As our lips part, I feel complete once again.

“We were such
